Understanding Intervertebral Discs: Functions and Importance

Many people probably have heard of the disease of spinal discs, such as herniated discs, degenerative discs, but did you know that the actually intervertebral disc of the spine? So what exactly is it? In this post, I will invite you to get to know each other.

The intervertebral disc is the part between each vertebra. The appearance of each intervertebral disc has 2 layers: an inner layer and an outer layer. For the inner intervertebral disc, it is soft like jelly and surrounded by an outer cervical disc that is made of tough fibers, which wraps and prevents the inner cervical disc from moving out, It is comparable to a car tire that prevents air from leaking out.

The functions of the spinal discs

1. It is the connection between each vertebra, this allows for movement of the spine, such as bending, tilting or rotating at the waist.

2. Be a shock absorber ,this is comparable to the air in a car tire.'

Why does a herniated disc press on a nerve?

When there is a tear in the outer intervertebral disc ,whether the cause is from lifting heavy objects, using the wrong back posture, accidents or exercising too hard. There will be a hole in the outer cervical disc. The jelly-like inner disc can move through the hole and press on the nerve. The patient will have back pain radiating down the leg, leg weakness or numbness.

What will happen to the hole in the spinal disc?

The body repairs itself by building membrane to close the hole. However, the strength will be less than before. This makes the area a likely place for a herniated disc to occur again, especially in the first 1-2 months, you should avoid certain activities such as lifting heavy objects and sitting in one position for a long time. Severe bending and tilting of the back and strenuous exercise.

"In case of doubt, it is recommended to consult a specialist doctor directly."
